photo critique

The 5 pictures attached to the assignment are rich in elements of art and principles of design. Pictures 01, 02, and 03 have strong elements of art. In Pic 01, the colour chosen by the artist follows a palette of cool colours from a blue palette. Pic 02 brings great value to the graffiti wall bringing darker tones towards it while leaving the background of the building under construction lighter. Pic 03 is able to capture many different textures, starting from the red building, to the texture of the trains, the grass and even the rails. The principles of design I decided to point out are in pictures 02, 04 and 05. Alongside Pic 02’s great value, it also has great contrast between the graffiti building and the background after the art on the walls. Pic 04 contains patterns; the picture was taken so that all that is seen is the pattern of the diamond shaped grid. Pic 05, contains great balance and unity in placing all its subjects in and out of focus so that it is very aesthetically pleasing.

The main thing I would change about the pictures involves pic 01. What I would try to improve is the fact that the photo very zoomed in and the quality of the picture has been devalued. If I were to take this picture I would try to come as close to the art in focus as I could to make the use of that much zoom not necessary. What I appreciate about them is that most of them involve street art and bringing value to it. The photographers managed to focus on the arts even if very delicately and brought life to them by showing the world in which these arts live in. I also really enjoyed the way the photographers used balancing items and contrast in the process of bringing all these elements to life.

Photography is an essential element of culture because it reveals insights into the human experience. Photographers are the ones who paint the world in a whole new point of view and make it available for humanity to experience the world in a different way. Some might say graffiti is not art or may not see some of the places photographed as pretty, but the way these photographers took these pictures made them beautiful. People sometimes need incentives to truly appreciate what is around them and I believe these pictures do the job.

shape_Gi_C.jpg

"Shape" is one of the Elements of Art. This picture represents shape in the flat squares each tile makes. The repetition of these squares makes up one of the Principles of Design, which is "pattern".

"Texture" is another Element of Art. This picture shows the texture on the wood but it also shows "pattern" due to the repetition of the wood pieces on the middle and background. Not only so but it also demonstrated "form", since it shows length, width and somewhat, the height of the wood piece.

emphasis_Gi_C.jpg

This picture demonstrates "emphasis" and "depth" as the subject of the picture is right in front but there is also depth demonstrated with the background.

contrast-value.jpg

This picture demonstrates "contrast" and "value" as the elements of the picture are composed together creating the contrasting the colors and the black, in addition to the value demonstrated between the light and dark aspects of the picture. It can be said that the picture also shows the texture of the textile and on the zipper holder. Within the textile, there is also a pattern present.

This picture is a great representation of "texture" as one of the Elements of Art.
